Power Rangers PINK #4: Synopsis

Stuck in a sinking Typhonis, and Goldar and the Pink Ranger have no choice but to team up to find a way to save themselves as well as Kimberly’s mom. Meanwhile, Serge, his sister Britt, and the Yellow and Black Rangers are having problems of their own while trying to escort civilians to safety. With Zordon losing power thanks to his energy being used to give Kimberly, Trini, and Zack their powers, time is of the utmost essence to finish off Verto and return his monsters back to their civilian forms. In order for that to happen, the Power Rangers are in for some new teammates – ones they certainly did not expect.

Power Rangers PINK #4: Breakdown

Goldar is not a fan of the Pink Ranger’s plan for a temporary truce to save their lives, and who is surprised? Back in issue 3, Verto sent the two into the Typhonis and had the giant zord walk right into the ocean with the goal of drowning them. Despite starting off with the will to fight, Goldar and the Pink Ranger hesitantly join forces to find a way out. The way out comes in the form of Kimberly’s old zord: the Firebird. The larger zords are too entwined with Typhonis’ power, but the Firebird was one of the smallest zords that can help them achieve their plan.

The Firebird separates itself from the rest of Typhonis and escorts the Pink Ranger and Goldar to freedom. The Pink Ranger’s plan is to rejoin the other Power Rangers and force Verto to return the monsters back to humans. Goldar has other plans. He jumps out and attacks Verto with the intention of killing him, but Verto bites him and escapes.

Our heroes regroup and re learn that Zordon is losing his powers. His energy is being used to transmit power to the Sword of Light – granting Kimberly, Trini, and Zack their ability to transform back into Power Rangers. Not only that, but communicating to them on earth demands a great amount of energy. In short: they’re running out of time. Alpha 5 breaks it down to maybe another 24 hours before Zordon’s life is in jeopardy more than it is; he could die. Zordon tells the team that their best bet is to have a full Power Ranger team, not just the three of them. And with that, Serge and Britt are transformed into temporary Blue and Red Rangers.

The now five Power Rangers (and Kimberly’s mom) regroup with Goldar and they shake hands (gasp!) on their deal to defeat Verto. Goldar knows that Verto, his army, and the Typhonis will all be back to finish Goldar off and take over the city before aiming at taking over the world. The Power Rangers can’t have that happen, either.

They begin assisting the townspeople – cleaning up, rebuilding fences, providing food and water…but it all stops when Goldar spots Verto atop the Typhonis…coming to finish where he left off.

The Cover and Art

Another fantastic cover by Elsa Charretier! The colors are bright ad dynamic, and the blue background causes the pink and gold colors to pop out even more than usual. The Pink Ranger definitely stands out tremendously on the cover because of the background and the light. I also thought it was a great touch to have the electricity in the background be bright blue – neon almost. It matches the pink sparks and splatters in the spots on Goldar’s body where the Pink Ranger’s arrows have stabbed him. It’s interesting to note that they used the Pink Ranger’s old design for the cover instead of her new design…but then again, all of the covers have had Kimberly in her old school costume rather than her new one. And another interesting aspect is how they chose to have the main cover be Kimberly VS Goldar when really that’s not the main concern in the issue. It leaves readers oblivious to the twist inside, and hides spoilers and potential hints of what’s to come. Well played.

Daniele Di Nicuolo and Sarah Stern tackle the illustrations and colors once more, and they’re still a fantastic duo for this mini-series. I’ve spoken in past issues about how I love the simple colored and drawn backgrounds as compared to the bright and detailed characters. And I’ve mentioned my love for their facial expressions. Those two continue in issue four, but it’s the little things too that I noticed are so in character.

On page seven, the Pink Ranger is trying to work with Goldar on an escape plan. She’s talking but her hand motions are amazing. The very last panel wins me each time: What about…a smaller zord? And she holds her hands in a way to indicate a small object. It’s tiny, it’s not that big a deal, but it speaks volumes. I love it. And I am a gigantic fan of how there’s pink detailing in each of the Power Rangers’ costumes to designate the power came from Kimberly and the Sword of Light. A+. Really lovely addition.

In Conclusion

The story is picking up fast. We’ve got two issues left and so much to do. The fight between the Power Rangers and Verto will not be easy, that’s for sure. The fact that Zordon keeps repeating that the five of them are weak individually but strongest together…that will certainly play a giant role in the last two issues to come.

Kimberly’s grown up. She’s troubleshooting, brainstorming, going outside her comfort zone to do what has to be done. She’s thinking of herself, of her mom, of the other Rangers, of the townspeople, of Goldar of all people…she’s not selfish and valley girl like her ’90s self was. She’s an experienced adult now. However, shades of the old Kimberly still shine through: Though it is a little tempting to leave him there, said when Goldar falls away from the Firebird and she promises to sweep in and get him. If you need us, we make the rules, got it? when speaking to Goldar about working together to defeat Verto.

I want to see more teamwork now that there’s five Rangers. They’ve been working great together, but Kim was stuck for a while. Also, Serge and Britt just became Rangers. It’s intriguing to think how they’ll become a five person team. What will their teamwork be like? What kind of role will Goldar play? What about Kim’s mom?

It was fantastic to see Kimberly take the Firebird back, and her comment, Hello, old girl… Felt like we were going home. It had been years. I’m really loving the attention to detail in making sure the ’90s show wasn’t forgotten, and that old school fans could enjoy every second of this series like anyone else would. I’m falling in love with this series more and more with each issue.

I’m still telling everyone to go to your local shop and pick PINK up. There’s time before the series ends, so please go give it a read! The team at Boom! Studios are really working hard and it shows. As a longtime Kim fan, I am incredibly appreciative and am looking forward to seeing how this story carries through and finishes up.

Drop a comment below – what do you guys think of PINK so far? What’s your favorite take away? Who else is secretly hoping Tommy comes back and they go to the Juice Bar back at Angel Grove to catch up when it’s all done? Just me? Okay.
