Power Rangers PINK #2: Synopsis
Kimberly is in for a lot more than she bargained for. The last issue had her unexpectedly reuniting with Goldar who seems to be the one behind her family (and the rest of the town’s) disappearance. He has her mother captive, and doesn’t waste any time using her to his advantage in an attempt to…what, exactly? Kim rushes off, realizing that she cannot handle Goldar and his allies on her own. She receives aid from Zordon once again who has her enlist the help of some old friends since the Power Rangers are lost on their own mission against Rita and Lord Zedd. Unfortunately for our new team, Goldar expected this… Goldar planned this.
Power Rangers PINK #2: Breakdown
Goldar has turned Kim’s mom into one of the monsters he’s working with. He keeps telling them to bring the Pink Ranger to him, meaning he definitely has concocted some sort of plan with her in mind. We don’t get any further answers here, for Kim realizes she’s outnumbered and flees. She meets up with Serge again who doesn’t provide much help or any further info. He asks Kim what’s going on and demands to help out, not wanting to get left out or behind since it’s his town that’s in danger, too. She sends him on a side mission to alert other citizens of the town that are still around to escape before Goldar gets to them. Of course, Serge doesn’t obey; he stays to listen in on Kim’s conversation with Zordon and subsequently gets captured by one of the monsters Goldar is working with.
On a more positive note, Kimberly is happily reunited with both Trini and Zack in South America where they’ve been working on their conservation project after having left Angel Grove for a peace conference. Kim fills them both in on what’s been going on in France with the missing citizens and Goldar, and the two are more than ready to jump back into action to help a friend. They teleport back to France and get briefed by Zordon on what is going on and what they must do to handle it.
The Sword of Light is used to transfer some of Kimberly’s Pink Ranger Power to Zack and Trini in order to transform them back into the Black and Yellow Rangers. Because Kimberly shared her powers, all three are weaker individually. However, when they fight together their powers increase dramatically. One major concern is that the Sword of Light draws power from Zordon in order to allow the three rangers to transform. It leaves him vulnerable more and more so the longer he is without it. It is a major risk that they have no choice but to take.
They begin to discuss what to do with the sword. They cannot take it with them to fight Goldar, that’s far too dangerous. So what do they do? Before they can come up with a plan, a transmission comes in that they can all hear – the White Ranger, Tommy Oliver. His voice is breaking up and it seems to be a distress call he is making to Zordon. The three rangers don’t know why they are hearing it, but assume it is because of Zordon’s power that they currently hold, the call is able to be routed to them. Kim shouts out to Tommy who hears her, but the transmission is gone just before he can say anything.
Once again, there is no time to worry or plan anything about the sword, the White Ranger, nor the fate of the other rangers. Goldar’s monster team surrounds the trio and they are unable to take down the mass amount of monsters. Thanks to this, Goldar is able to get the Sword of Light from the Pink Ranger and the trio lose their transformations before they are knocked out. They wake up, captive in Goldar’s new lair, and learn that the entire thing was planned from the get-go. The whole reason Goldar went after Kimberly? He knew she’d get the other rangers and knew they’d gain access to the Sword of Light.
With the sword in his possession, Goldar summons what he calls his new war zord: Typhonis. The zord is made up of Kimberly, Zack, and Trini’s old zords from when they were Power Rangers. Kim berates herself, upset that she fell so easily for Goldar’s trap. Trini and Zack try to calm her down, but it doesn’t help much that Goldar reveals he had help in making his plan come to fruition…help from none other than Serge.
The Cover and Art
Drawn once again by Elsa Charretier, this month’s cover plays off Kimberly’s original Pink Ranger costume instead of the remixed version she has in this new series. You can see her facial features and hair through the helmet and her shirt through the top of the costume, so it’s a cool combination of Kimberly and Pink Ranger to indicate that despite the transfer of Pink Ranger back in the original show, Kimberly will always be a Pink Ranger.
Behind Kimberly is a deep pink with white spark-like lines that is very reminiscent of the background during the original show’s transformations. I like the nod back to that!
The art in this issue is again illustrated by Daniele Di Nicuolo and colored by Sarah Stern. They both do a fantastic job at making the images in each panel pop. The emotions in each character’s face is clear and true, and goes with the dialogue. The backgrounds are simplistic to not take away from the more important foreground, and the colors pop all around. They’re vibrant, fun, and go very well together. I think they work well together as a team.
In Conclusion
It was so good to see Zack and Trini again! I did enjoy Adam, Rocky, and Aisha as the new Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers back in the ’90s, however my heart was always with the original three. They did mention in the comic that Jason was caught up with a mission of his own which explains why he was absent. Regardless of his absence, it felt wonderful to see three of the originals together again. I appreciated the fact that because Trini and Zack are sharing Kimberly’s power, they have pink elements in their costumes. Their costumes also got a redesign that fits them more: the Black Ranger having a matching hoodie, and the Yellow Ranger with added details and elements to her pants and boots.
Another thing I loved: Tommy. As a kid, I stopped watching the show when the 1995 movie came out. So for me, the movie was my series finale. Seeing Tommy reappear even if only for three panels was exciting and brought around some hope for the kid in me to see a Tommy and Kimberly reunion. I’m beyond ready for that!
Goldar’s getting more daring, and I’m impressed that he’s trying to shine to gain Rita’s respect and attention. He mentions this, and it settles that Kimberly, Trini, and Zack’s problem with Goldar is entirely separate from the Power Rangers’ mission against Rita and Zedd. There is a lot going on at once, and I’m intrigued to see how it all is handled and gets wrapped up.
There are four more issues in the series, and I’m looking very forward to reading the next chapter of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: PINK! Check out your local comic book store for an issue, you won’t regret it.
